STC Freight Aids Community in the Aftermath of Devastating Tongaat Tornado

Community members line up to receive aid from STC Freight after the devastating Tongaat Tornado.

On Monday, June 3rd, 2024, a devastating tornado ripped through Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal, causing extensive damage to homes, schools, roads, and infrastructure. The Tongaat tornado left over 1,200 people homeless and claimed 12 lives. In the wake of this disaster, STC Freight stepped in to provide much-needed assistance to the affected community.

In response to the Tongaat tornado, STC Freight deployed one of their trucks, a dedicated driver and office members on Saturday, June 8th. This effort was part of a larger community initiative to transport essential donations to those in need. Our involvement was critical in delivering aid to the hardest-hit area, the oThongathi area. This was confirmed by the eThekwini Municipality as the most severely affected.

Delivering Essential Supplies

STC Freight’s truck made two deliveries on June 8th, carrying vital supplies including food, clothing, and household goods. These items were crucial in providing immediate relief to the displaced families. STC Freight covered all the logistics and fuel costs for these operations, showing the company’s commitment to supporting the Tongaat community during this challenging time.

The severe weather that caused the Tongaat tornado was due to an upper air cut-off low system. This triggered storms, heavy rain, flooding, and even snowfall in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. According to Kevin Rae, Chief Forecaster at the South African Weather Service, these conditions created an unstable atmosphere that led to the formation of tornadoes.
